In addition to the formal academic programme, SUISS offers an extensive and varied programme of cultural and social activities, which always prove a hugely rewarding part of the friendly atmosphere of the School. A prominent feature of the programme is a series of readings from Scotland's leading contemporary writers: guests have included Alasdair Gray, A. L. Kennedy, Edwin Morgan, Ali Smith, Bernard MacLaverty, Don Paterson, Brian McCabe and Tom Leonard.

During the fourth and fifth weeks of the Summer School, the city is host to the Edinburgh International Festival, the Fringe Festival and the International Book Festival. Some 700 theatre companies and other groups visit the Edinburgh International Festival and its Fringe, offering an extraordinary range of dance, music theatre, mime, and visual arts. The Edinburgh International Book Festival plays host to many of the world's renowned authors. There are additional International Festivals devoted to jazz, film, and television. For the month of August Edinburgh becomes the cultural centre of Europe.
