The Summer School Student Hosts
Student Hosts 2013
This year, Rhiannon Bolos from the
USA returns as a student host for six weeks, Gonda Sanders from
Belgium returns as a student host for four weeks, and Cedric Van
Dijck, who is a former SUISS student from Belgium will stay with
us for two weeks.
'My
name is Rhiannon. I am from New York, and I am currently studying English Literature
at the University of Edinburgh. Travelling, writing, meeting new people, and
dancing are all passions of mine. I participated in the SUISS program in 2010
and it changed my life. Not only did I fall in love with the literature and
writing at a whole new level, I also fell in love with the city. The SUISS
Program is the main reason I am here in Edinburgh today. Edinburgh reminds
me of a giant village that is laced with both Enlightenment ideas and cosmopolitan
advancements. This experience is going to give you all a chance to be immersed
into many different cultures and into literature like never before. The staff,
along with the tutors and lecturers, are all amazing and talented people. It
is truly an honour to be a part of this program again. Plus, the summer is
the best time to be in Edinburgh. I love to learn about other cultures and
I look forward to getting to know all of you and sharing this experience in
this wonderful city that has become my home.' - Rhiannon
'Hi
guys, I'm Gonda. I am currently taking a master's degree in Western Literature
in Leuven, Belgium. In 2010, I was a SUISS-student just like you and I can
promise this programme is a great way to kick off the summer. The inspiring
lectures and thought-provoking seminars got me hooked on Scottish literature,
the SUISS-team was fantastic and my fellow students were always great company.
I really had a wonderful time there, so I'm delighted to be back and join you
for four weeks full of social and cultural activities, city strolls and memorable
conversations. I can't wait to welcome you all in Edinburgh!' - Gonda
'Hi.
My name is Cedric. I am currently completing an MSc degree in English at
the University of Edinburgh. I was a student at SUISS in 2009 and, looking
back, I now realise that opportunities like this summer school surface very
rarely in life. Coming here changed my understanding of literature. I don't
know whether it was Edinburgh or the tutors or our collective reading of
the canonical modernists that did this - possibly a combination of all three.
You will feel the same, I am sure. Meeting students from all four corners
of the world will only enrich that experience. I might even go out on a limb
and suggest that you'd love it here. Scotland in summer is an inspiring place.
I look forward to welcoming you to Edinburgh.' - Cedric
